A Letter from our New Principal

February 11, 2016

Dear Cowell Elementary School Families:

It is with great excitement that I introduce myself as the new principal of Cowell Elementary School! Throughout the principal selection process, it was clear to me that you all are committed to the achievement of all students and to the creation of a positive, inclusive culture. I am honored to have been chosen to support this effort!

While I have been involved in education for 15 years in Colorado, I have also studied and worked in other fields which have prepared me to support your children and community. At the University of Redlands in Southern California, I majored in Government, focusing on public policy. I spent two years in the Peace Corps in St. Vincent & the Grenadines as a Youth Development Worker, and I served as an Urban Fellow in the New York City Mayor’s Office.

I then came to Denver to be a teacher. I obtained my teaching license and an advanced degree in educational leadership, taught in Denver Public Schools (DPS) at Fairview Elementary and Schmitt Elementary and was the Assistant Principal at Dora Moore (ECE- 8th Grade) School. I worked as a Principal in Adams County School District 50 before coming back to DPS five years ago to become the Principal at Traylor Academy. All of those experiences have prepared me for this opportunity to work with each of you to provide equitable opportunities for our students!

I currently live in southwest Denver. In my spare time, I enjoy being with my family & friends, reading, volunteering, travelling, hiking, and snowshoeing in the winter. My partnership with you will be focused on ensuring that we’re cultivating the potential for our children. Please look for an invitation coming soon for an informal “Meet and Greet” opportunity. I can’t wait to get to know each of you – and learn about your hopes and dreams for Cowell!

Sincerely,

Shayley Olson

Sinceramente,

Shayley Olson
