How Important is Homework?

District Policy (IKB-Homework) recognizes that all learning cannot be accomplished with the limited amount of time allotted for classroom instruction. Therefore, homework is routinely assigned to all students in DPS, and should be completed outside the classroom. Parents should expect regular homework assignments and may question the lack of such assignments.

The following district guidelines are suggested for use by schools in developing a minimum schedule for homework:

  • Kindergarten
    • 10-15 minutes, 1-2 days per week
  • Grade 1
    • 10-15 minutes, 1-2 days per week
  • Grade 2
    • 15-20 minutes, 2 days per week
  • Grade 3
    • 15-25 minutes, 2 days per week
  • Grade 4
    • 15-30 minutes, 2-3 days per week
  • Grade 5
    • 20-30 minutes, 3-4 days per week

In addition, all of our students should be expected to read (or be read to) for at least 20 minutes per day at home.

This schedule should be used as a continuum to fit individual teacher and student needs, with length and type of assignment depending on the abilities and maturity of students. As the school year progresses, the amount of time and the number of days allotted for the completion of homework assignments may increase. Weeks of assessment and other holiday breaks should be used to focus on reading to increase their stamina instead of being considered “time off.”
